Nature-Integrated Sanctuary , Canada

Nature-Integrated Sanctuary is a study in “Resonant Minimalism.” The project utilizes raw, cast-in-place concrete to create a meditative canvas that captures the shifting rhythms of light and shadow, intentionally blurring the threshold between interior shelter and the surrounding ecosystem. By integrating reflective water features and maintaining a structural form that embraces local flora, the sanctuary serves as a living, breathing transition space—a place where the stillness of brutalist form meets the vibrant energy of the Canadian landscape to offer a sanctuary for both human reflection and natural life.

To articulate the building’s rigid, monolithic geometry, we constructed a physical study model using balsa wood. This material was chosen for its workability, allowing us to test the interplay of light and shadow in a tangible form. The use of resin to simulate the water features was essential to capture the reflective, mirror-like quality we envisioned for the final site, while the steel wire trees serve as a skeletal counterpoint; their raw, industrial texture mimics the sharpness of evergreen branches, emphasizing the transition from manufactured structure to organic silhouette.

We embraced the heavy, rhythmic modularity of the concrete walls, emphasizing their mass and their defiance of space. The stark, repetitive lines create a sense of permanence and grounding.

Light acts as the mediator. By integrating warm, interior-LEDs into our physical model, we explored how the building transforms from a fortress into a sanctuary. The light doesn’t just illuminate the space; it carves through the “concrete,” creating a contemplative rhythm that invites the viewer to look inward.
